Perfect Rice

Preparation

For every cup of rice you want to prepare (between half and one cup make a serving), bring 1.5 to two cups of water to a boil (you will have to try this as the amount of water depends on the type of rice you use). Add some salt to the water and use a saucepan with a tightly fitting lid.

Whilst you are waiting for the water to boil, wash the rice under cold water to get rid of any excess starch that might make your rice sticky. When the water is boiling, add the rice, put the lid on and turn the heat all the way down so your rice simmers.

After 12 to 15 minutes (this depends on the type of rice you are using), take the saucepan off the hob and let it sit for 5 to 20 minutes so all excess moisture is absorbed by the rice.

Before serving, very carefully fluff up the rice with a fork.

Alternative

Alternatively, bring lots of water (5 cups per 1 cup of rice) with a pinch of salt to a boil, add the washed rice to the boiling water and boil at low heat (just so that a couple of bubbles come up) for 12 to 15 minutes (depending on cooking time given on the back of the rice packet). Strain rice in a strainer and put the strained rice back into the saucepan. Let sit for 5 to 20 minutes (this gives you a bit of leeway with the main dish you are cooking with the rice), then fluff with a fork and serve. The idea here is that the rice will absorb any left over liquid after having been strained and become fluffy and dry.
